What You'll Need
Step-by-Step Installation
Choose Your Location
Identify where you'd like the fixture to hang or be mounted. For wall sconces, the ideal height is typically 60–66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture. Consider proximity to a standard wall outlet — our plug-in cords are 1.8 metres long, giving you generous placement flexibility.
Mark Your Mounting Points
Hold the mounting plate or ceiling canopy against the wall or ceiling at your chosen location. Use a pencil to lightly mark each screw hole. Use a spirit level across the marks to confirm they are perfectly aligned. If mounting into a ceiling, identify the joist with a stud finder before marking.
Drill & Insert Anchors
If your marked points land on a stud or joist, drill directly and skip anchors. If mounting into drywall between studs, drill holes sized for the included wall anchors, then gently tap the anchors flush with the wall surface.
Attach the Mounting Plate
Align the mounting plate with the anchor holes and drive the screws snugly — firm but not over-tightened. For pendant fixtures, attach the ceiling canopy at this stage, feeding the cord through the canopy before securing.
Attach the Fixture Body
For wall sconces: hook or slide the lamp body onto the mounted plate. For pendants: thread the cord through the canopy and knot securely, then attach the shade or globe. Ensure all locking nuts or set screws are tightened before releasing the fixture.
Route & Conceal the Cord
Guide the cord along the wall toward the nearest outlet. Use the included adhesive cord clips or raceway channels (sold separately) to keep the cord neatly along the baseboard, door frame, or wall edge. Avoid running cords under rugs or across doorways.
Install the Bulb & Plug In
Insert the recommended bulb (check the fixture's spec sheet for max wattage and base type — typically E26 for North America). Screw it in finger-tight. Plug the cord into a grounded wall outlet. Turn on the switch and confirm the light illuminates correctly.
Cord Routing Options
Exposed Cord — Decorative Style
- Best with twisted fabric or braided cords
- Drape along wall at a slight angle toward outlet
- Use brass cord hooks for a curated look
- Works especially well in industrial or vintage interiors
- No additional materials needed
Concealed Cord — Clean Finish
- Use adhesive cord clips every 8–10 inches along baseboard
- PVC cord raceways paint to match wall color seamlessly
- Run cord vertically behind furniture when possible
- Consider in-wall cord concealment kits for a truly hardwired look
- Ideal for minimalist and contemporary interiors
Safety Guidelines
Outlet Compatibility
Vakkerlight plug-in fixtures are designed for standard 110–120V grounded outlets (North America). Do not use with ungrounded 2-prong adapters. For 220–240V regions, consult our Global Voltage Guide.
Bulb Wattage
Never exceed the maximum wattage listed on the fixture label or specification sheet. Overlamping generates excess heat and may damage the shade, cord, or socket over time.
Heat & Clearance
Maintain a minimum of 3 inches of clearance between the bulb and any fabric shade. For enclosed shades, use LED bulbs only — they run significantly cooler than incandescent alternatives.
Cord Care
Inspect the cord periodically for fraying, kinks, or damage. Do not pinch cords under furniture legs. If the cord is damaged, contact Vakkerlight support for a replacement — do not use the fixture.
Outdoor Use
Standard plug-in fixtures are rated for indoor use only. For outdoor or damp-location use, select fixtures from the Vakkerlight Outdoor Collection, which carry appropriate IP ratings.
Secure Mounting
Always verify that mounting screws are fully tightened and wall anchors are properly seated before hanging the fixture. Periodically check that fixtures remain firmly secured to the wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for lightweight sconces (under 1 kg) you can use adhesive picture-hanging strips rated for the fixture's weight — products like 3M Command Strips work well on smooth, clean walls. For heavier fixtures or those with stone, ceramic, or glass shades, we strongly recommend drilling into a stud or using rated wall anchors for safety. Adhesive mounts may fail over time due to temperature changes, humidity, or the cumulative weight of the cord pulling downward.
Wall lamp cords are 1.8 m (approximately 6 feet); swag pendants come with a generous 4.5 m (approximately 15 feet). If additional length is needed, use a grounded 3-prong extension cord rated for at least 13 amps and matching your fixture's wattage. Avoid running extension cords across high-traffic areas, under rugs, or through doorways. For a cleaner, more permanent solution, consider having an electrician install an additional outlet closer to your desired fixture location.
Yes — smart bulbs from brands like Philips Hue, LIFX, Wiz, and Sengled are fully compatible with any E26 socket fixture. Ensure the smart bulb doesn't exceed the maximum wattage listed on your fixture label. Leave the fixture switch in the "on" position permanently, and control brightness, color, and scheduling via the smart bulb's companion app or your preferred smart home platform (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit). Avoid using smart bulbs with in-line dimmers — they conflict.
The in-line dimmer is a small rotary dial or slide control on the cord itself, typically positioned 30–60 cm below the plug. Rotate the dial counterclockwise to turn off, then gradually rotate clockwise to increase brightness to your preferred level. Always use dimmable LED bulbs — non-dimmable LEDs will flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly. For best results, check the bulb packaging for the "dimmable" label and ensure compatibility with leading-edge or trailing-edge dimmers.
Many Vakkerlight plug-in fixtures can be converted to hardwired installation by a licensed electrician. The plug end is cut off, the cord is shortened to length, and the wires are connected directly to a junction box following local electrical codes. This conversion preserves the fixture's design while eliminating the visible cord. Please contact our support team with your specific product model before proceeding — we'll confirm compatibility and provide wiring specifications (typically black/hot, white/neutral, green/ground).
