Kozo Paper Globe Swag Pendant — mulberry paper, mid-century soul, ten sizes.

A single globe of hand-crafted mulberry paper — Kozo fibre woven into a smooth, luminous sphere that glows warmly from within. Where most pendants frame the bulb as object, the Kozo Globe dissolves it entirely: the light source disappears and what remains is a diffused radiance that fills the room without direction or glare. Inspired by the Japanese paper lantern tradition and the mid-century modernism of Isamu Noguchi’s paper lamp studies, this is a plug-in swag pendant available in ten diameters from 40 cm to 120 cm. This listing features a white cord.

Rice Paper Series — Lightness, Harmony, and Timeless Design

White cord version. A black cord version of this pendant is available as a separate listing — all specifications and dimensions are identical, only the cord colour differs.

Hand-bonded mulberry paper — minor glue traces are normal

Each globe is individually hand-crafted using the Chigiri bonding technique. Minor glue traces along the edge of the shade may be visible — this is a natural result of the hand-bonding process and is not a quality defect. Each piece will differ slightly from the next.

Swag-style plug-in — no hardwiring required

Runs on a 180″ (457 cm) cord with an inline push-button on/off switch — enough cord to swag across a ceiling hook and drop to the desired height. Simply hook, drape, plug in, and done. No electrician needed, fully repositionable.

E26 (US/CA) or E27 (EU/AU) — bulb not included

Compatible with LED and Edison filament bulbs. A warm-white LED at 2700–3000 K is recommended — the warm tone passes through the Kozo paper as a pure, ambient glow with the bulb completely invisible from the outside. A globe or standard A-shape LED at 8–12W is appropriate for most sizes. For the larger sizes (∅ 80 cm+) a 12–15W LED may be preferred for adequate ambient output. Avoid cool white which creates a harsh quality through the paper.

What is a swag pendant and how do I install it?

A swag pendant hangs from a ceiling hook rather than from a hardwired electrical box. Install a ceiling hook or swag hook at your desired position, drape the cord from the plug in a gentle arc across the ceiling to the hook, then let the pendant drop to your preferred height. The excess cord can be gathered or hidden along a ceiling beam. No electrician required — the plug connects to any standard wall or floor outlet. The 180″ (457 cm) cord provides ample length for most room configurations.

Which size is right for my dining table?

As a general rule, a single globe pendant should be about 50–60% of the table width for good visual balance. For a 4-seat round table of 90–100 cm: ∅ 50–60 cm. For a 6-seat table of 120 cm: ∅ 60–70 cm. For a grand dining room statement or large rectangular table: ∅ 75–90 cm. If you want the globe to dominate as a centrepiece in a high-ceiling space, the ∅ 100 cm or 120 cm creates a truly dramatic effect.

What is Kozo mulberry paper?

Kozo (楚) is the Japanese paper mulberry plant, and its bast fibres have been used to make handmade washi paper for over a thousand years. Kozo paper is prized for its long fibres, soft texture, and translucency — properties that make it ideal for paper lanterns. When light passes through Kozo paper, it is diffused evenly with a warm, organic quality that no synthetic material replicates. The paper is durable for its weight but should be treated as a delicate handcraft object.

How do I care for the paper globe?

Do not use water or damp cloths on the paper shade. For dust, use a very soft dry brush or low-power compressed air held at distance. Keep away from moisture and direct rain. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may yellow the paper over time. The paper globe is delicate — do not compress, press, or store under other objects.

Is this lamp certified for North America and Europe?

Yes. It holds certifications compatible with North America, Saudi Arabia, Europe, and Australia and operates on AC 110–240V worldwide.

Where Tradition Meets Tranquility Akari Series — Light,
Sculpted by Hand and Spirit
Every lantern begins as raw paper and bamboo. Every crease is placed by hand. The process has not changed in a hundred years — and it shows in the quality of the glow.

The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art
Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.
Kozo · Mulberry Mitsumata Gampi Bamboo Frame Hand-Formed Sun-Dried
· Revered for its beauty and durability, washi has long graced calligraphy, origami, architectural shoji screens, and festival lanterns — reflecting Japan's rich cultural heritage and refined aesthetic sensibility. Of Paper, Light, and Cultural Elegance — this is a tradition of making that has endured because it cannot be improved upon. Only practised, inherited, and passed forward.
Complete washi paper production process — 6 stages from raw fibre to finished sheet
Paper · Light · Craft Paper of Light,
Art of Serenity
From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.
01

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

02

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

03

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

04

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

05

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.

Handcrafted Light · Tranquil Glow More Than Décor —
A Presence
When illuminated, a washi lantern does not just light a room. It transforms it — casting a warm, diffused glow that settles the air, softens the shadows, and invites a slower pace.

"Long associated with festivals, meditation, and peaceful living, these lanterns are more than just décor — they are a gentle celebration of harmony and timeless beauty."
