Chigiri Paper Tower Floor Lamp — stacked washi lanterns, soft glow, Japanese spirit.

Four stacked washi paper lantern forms — round, wide, narrow, round again — rise as a single sculptural column from a minimal matte black iron base. The lamp is made using the Japanese Chigiri-e technique: layers of hand-torn washi paper are bonded together to create a surface that is simultaneously structural and luminous, filtering light into a warm, even ambient glow that has no hard edges and no hot spots. In the tradition of Japanese paper lantern design, the Chigiri Tower treats light as material — soft, diffused, and deeply calming.

Chigiri paper craftsmanship — minor glue traces are normal

Each lamp is made using a hand-bonding process in which washi paper layers are adhered with glue. Minor traces of glue along the edge of the lampshade may be visible — this is a natural characteristic of the Chigiri hand-craft process and does not constitute a quality defect. No two lamps will be identical.

Plug-in — no electrician required

Runs on a 59″ (150 cm) cord with an inline on/off switch — simply plug into any standard outlet and place where you need it. Fully portable. No hardwiring, no installation.

E26 (US/CA) or E27 (EU/AU) — bulb not included

Compatible with LED and Edison filament bulbs. A warm-white LED at 2700–3000 K is strongly recommended — the warm tone passes through the layered washi paper as a soft amber-white glow with no visible source, exactly as the form is designed to work. A globe or standard A-shape E26/E27 LED at 8–10W provides ample ambient light for a living room or bedroom setting. Avoid cool white (5000K+) which creates a harsh clinical effect through the paper.

What is Chigiri-e paper craftsmanship?

Chigiri-e (ちぎり絵) is a traditional Japanese craft in which washi paper is hand-torn rather than cut, and the pieces are layered and bonded together. The torn edges create soft, feathered transitions between layers rather than sharp lines — this is what gives the lampshade its characteristic texture and the slightly uneven, organic surface that makes each piece unique. Minor glue traces along the shade edges are a normal result of the hand-bonding process.

Is the stacked form stable — will it topple?

Yes — the stacked paper lantern column is mounted on a flat-disc iron base that provides a stable, weighted footprint. At 118 cm tall and 45 cm wide, the proportions are well balanced for a standard floor lamp. It should not be placed in high-traffic corridors where it may be brushed against, or in areas accessible to young children or pets, as the washi paper shade is delicate.

How do I clean or maintain the paper shade?

Washi paper is delicate and should not be cleaned with water, damp cloths, or chemical cleaners. For light dust, use a very soft dry brush (a makeup or watercolour brush) or a low-power compressed air duster held at distance. Avoid direct contact with water or moisture. Keep away from direct sunlight for extended periods, which may yellow the paper over time. Do not place near open windows where rain or humidity can reach the shade.

What interior styles work best with this lamp?

The Chigiri Paper Tower works in any interior where natural material, restraint, and calm are valued — Japandi, Wabi-sabi, Scandinavian, and minimalist spaces are natural fits. The pure white paper and matte black base are neutral enough to coexist with almost any palette. It works particularly well in living rooms, bedrooms, and reading corners where ambient rather than task lighting is the goal. Its sculptural column form also suits entryways and studio spaces where a single fixture can serve as both light source and art object.

Is this lamp certified for North America and Europe?

Yes. It holds certifications compatible with North America, Saudi Arabia, Europe, and Australia and operates on AC 110–240V worldwide.

Where Tradition Meets Tranquility Akari Series — Light,

Every lantern begins as raw paper and bamboo. Every crease is placed by hand. The process has not changed in a hundred years — and it shows in the quality of the glow.

The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art
Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.
Kozo · Mulberry Mitsumata Gampi Bamboo Frame Hand-Formed Sun-Dried
· Revered for its beauty and durability, washi has long graced calligraphy, origami, architectural shoji screens, and festival lanterns — reflecting Japan's rich cultural heritage and refined aesthetic sensibility. Of Paper, Light, and Cultural Elegance — this is a tradition of making that has endured because it cannot be improved upon. Only practised, inherited, and passed forward.
Complete washi paper production process — 6 stages from raw fibre to finished sheet
Paper · Light · Craft Paper of Light,
Art of Serenity
From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.
01

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

02

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

03

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

04

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

05

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.

Handcrafted Light · Tranquil Glow More Than Décor —
A Presence
When illuminated, a washi lantern does not just light a room. It transforms it — casting a warm, diffused glow that settles the air, softens the shadows, and invites a slower pace.

"Long associated with festivals, meditation, and peaceful living, these lanterns are more than just décor — they are a gentle celebration of harmony and timeless beauty."
