The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art

Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.

From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.

Soft White Light

Exactly what I was looking for. The standard white paper lantern that I had in college! After a large chandelier came crashing down from the vaulted ceiling in my living room due to a faulty hook, I decided to get a hanging lamp that weighed hardly anything. You can put a really bright bulb in these and the paper diffuses it beautifully. It's like a giant bubble floating in the room. Very elegant. Everyone compliments us on it and it couldn't be more simple. Just be careful when assembling, hanging and changing the light bulb, the paper is fragile and prone to puncture and becomes more brittle over time. Take good care of it, though, and this lamp could last years.

So basically its just an oversized paper lantern, nothing fancy to hang it by, not more durable than a decorative paper lantern. Just need a rope with a light at the end of it and you can use this with it. Very easy to assemble just dont force anything because the paper can rip easily- like any paper lantern.

These paper lanterns look really great and add a lot of character to the room. All the bedrooms in our house have swag lighting and putting these paper lanterns on them seemed to fit the decor of the room no matter how it was decorated.
