The design and manufacturing process behind silk product series
Have you ever watched a silkworm spin a cocoon? It doesn't sew; it sprays. It builds a home out of thin air, layer by microscopic layer.
At Vakkerlight, we are obsessed with that process.
We took the iconic Mid-Century "Bubble" shape—a staple of American design history—and asked a simple question: Can we make it feel more alive?
The answer lay in combining the original 1940s "cocooning" engineering with the world’s most luxurious fiber: Mulberry Silk.
Today, we are taking you inside our workshop to show you exactly how we turn a steel cage into a glowing cloud of silk. Grab a coffee, this is satisfying. ☕️
✏️ The Concept: Redefining "Soft Light"
"Light should feel soft, not just look soft."
Every fixture starts as a sketch. Our designers studied organic forms—sea urchins, pears, and naturally formed cocoons. We wanted a shape that felt weightless.
In our early sketches, we calculated the geometry carefully. The lines needed to flow perfectly from top to bottom. If the curve is off by even a degree, the "skin" we apply later won't sit right. It’s a game of perfect tension.
⚙️ The Framework: Steel Wire & Structural Tension
The magic starts with the frame. We use high-strength, lightweight steel wires to create the "ribs" of the lamp.
- The Weld: These wires are precision-welded to the central rings.
- The Rotation: Once the frame is built, it’s mounted onto a heavy-duty turntable. This is crucial. To apply the silk evenly, the lamp must be spinning perfectly on its axis—like a potter’s wheel.
🕸️ The Process: Spinning the Cocoon
This is the moment everyone wants to see. This is how the bubble is born.
We don't stitch fabric. We use a specialized spray gun to apply the material while the frame is spinning.
Most bubble lamps on the market rely on a standard plastic polymer spray. It looks okay, but it feels like... well, plastic. We do it differently. We use real Mulberry Silk.
-
The Spin: The steel cage begins to rotate rapidly on the turntable.
-
The Spray: Our artisan uses a specialized spray gun. But instead of paint, it shoots out a proprietary fluid containing real Mulberry Silk fibers.
-
The Webbing: As the material hits the air, it solidifies into long, sticky strands—just like a spider web or a silkworm's thread.
-
The Bridge: Because the frame is spinning, these silk strands are pulled taut. They bridge the gaps between the wires, self-adhering and building up layer by layer.

☁️ The Material Shift: Why We Chose Silk Over Plastic
After the spraying is done, the lamp goes into a curing process. As it dries, the material shrinks tight over the frame.
So, why the Real Silk?
🖐️ The Tactile Difference: If you touch a standard bubble lamp, it’s smooth and cold (synthetic). If you touch ours, you feel the subtle, fibrous texture of natural silk.
🌙 The "Moonlight" Effect: Silk is a natural protein that refracts light differently than plastic. When you turn on our Bubble Pendant, the light doesn't just pass through; it blooms. It eliminates all harsh shadows and creates a soft, diffused ambiance that we call "captured moonlight."
🛋️ The Collection: A Shape for Every Space
Design isn't just about material; it's about form. We know that a New York loft needs a different vibe than a cozy California bungalow. That’s why the Silk Series comes in a family of distinct silhouettes, each with its own personality:
- 🛸 The Saucer (The Host): Wide and shallow. This is our best-seller for dining rooms. Because of its horizontal spread, it casts a broad pool of light over a table without obstructing the view across the room.
- 🏛️ The Cigar (The Statement): Tall and slender. This shape loves vertical space. It’s perfect for high-ceiling stairwells, quiet reading corners, or hung in a cluster of three at varying heights to create an art installation.
- 🍐 The Ball & Pear (The Classics): Organic and friendly. These shapes are incredibly versatile. They work beautifully in bedrooms or nurseries where you want a soft, calming presence that feels like a floating cloud.
💡 Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to mix and match. The silk material ties them all together, so you can hang a Saucer next to a Cigar for a dynamic, architectural look.
🎄Creating a Mid-Century Holiday Atmosphere
Why are we sharing this now? Because the holidays are all about atmosphere.
We spend so much time decorating the tree and setting the table, but we often forget the overhead light. A harsh bulb can kill the mood of a dinner party.
The Mulberry Silk Bubble Pendant is the ultimate holiday host.
- It’s Cozy: It brings that Hygge feeling instantly.
- It’s Versatile: Whether your Christmas decor is rustic farmhouse or sleek modern, the organic white shape fits in perfectly.
- It’s a Conversation Starter: When guests look up and ask about the light, you can tell them: "It’s not plastic. It’s real spun silk."
