Each washi pendant is handcrafted from translucent washi paper made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree — the same material used in traditional Japanese shoji screens. The paper filters and softens light into the warm, even glow of afternoon sun through a paper door, creating a serene, timeless presence in any interior.

Why are there glue traces on my lampshade?

This pendant is hand-bonded from washi paper and glue — a meticulous handcraft process. Minor traces of glue along the edge of the shade are a characteristic of this process, not a defect or quality issue. Each shade is individually made and will show the marks of its crafting.

What bulb is recommended for this pendant?

A warm-white LED (2700–3000 K) with an E26 or E27 base is strongly recommended. The washi paper softens and diffuses the light evenly, and a warm tone creates the characteristic golden-cream ambient glow. A clear filament Edison bulb is also a beautiful choice — its shape is subtly visible through the paper. See our E26/E27 bulb guide for more information.

Can the hanging height be adjusted?

Yes. The pendant includes a 59″ adjustable suspension cable. Extensions are available on request — contact our support team before ordering.

Is this pendant certified for North America and Europe?

The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art

Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.

From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.
