Made from translucent washi paper produced from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, this pendant creates a warm, diffused glow unlike any other material. Light through washi paper is often compared to sunlight filtered through traditional paper doors — a warm glow and a calm, pleasant ambiance. Choose a single shade in three sizes, or a cluster of two, three or five at graduated heights.

Glue traces are normal: Each shade undergoes a careful hand-bonding process using paper and glue. Minor glue traces along the shade edges are a natural result of this process and are not a quality defect.

Sizing & questions

Here is what most clients ask before choosing theirs.

What sizes are available?

Three single sizes: Small ∅ 17.7″ x H 9.8″ (45 x 25 cm), Medium ∅ 25.6″ x H 11.0″ (65 x 28 cm) and Large ∅ 34.6″ x H 13.8″ (88 x 35 cm), plus Duo, Trio and Five clusters that combine the sizes at graduated heights.

Why are there glue traces on the shade?

The shade is assembled by hand using paper and glue. Minor glue traces along the edges are a normal characteristic of this process, not a defect.

What bulb is recommended?

A warm 3000K E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison style. The light glows softly through the translucent washi paper, like sunlight through a traditional paper screen.

How long is the cable?

197″ (500 cm), long enough for double-height or lofted ceilings. It can be shortened at installation, and longer cables are available on request.

Which cable color should I choose?

White & White Cable blends into a white ceiling for a floating look; White & Black Cable adds a graphic line that stands out against light walls.

The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art

Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.

From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.

Wow! I love this lamp so much! I put it in our living room. It's the perfect size and looks great in our apartment window. It adds a lot of atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Exactly what was needed

This shade is aesthetically pleasing. You do need to take care when you put in the wire that holds it open. It would be easy to tear the paper globe. Once up, the fact that it is paper does not matter. It will last forever as long as nobody messes with it.
