Common questions

What sizes are available?

All three heights share the same Dia 40 cm / ∅ 15.7″ lanterns: H 114 cm / 44.9″, H 143 cm / 56.3″, and H 150 cm / 59″. The 44.9″ version suits 8-foot ceilings over a standard island or table; the 56.3″ and 59″ versions give more drop for higher ceilings. Custom sizes are available — email info@vakkerlighting.com.

Should I pick white wire or black wire?

White wire blends with the white paper shades and light ceilings for a softer look; black wire draws a crisp graphic line from ceiling to lamp. Both work the same electrically.

How does it install, and which plug do I need?

No hardwiring is needed. Hang the lamp from a ceiling swag hook rated for its weight, then run the 177.2″ (450 cm) cord to the nearest outlet. The cord has an inline on/off switch, and the plug comes in US, UK, EU, or AU type — choose the one that matches your wall outlet.

How do I care for the paper shades?

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and keep the shades away from moisture. The handcrafted mulberry paper may show minor glue traces along the edges — this is normal for hand-bonded construction.

The Material Japanese Washi —
A Timeless Art

Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper crafted from natural plant fibres — kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi. The meticulous process of stripping, boiling, washing, and beating fibres into pulp, then forming and drying sheets on bamboo screens, yields paper both exceptionally strong and delicately translucent.

From fibre to finished glow — every stage of a paper lantern's creation is guided by trained hands, quiet focus, and generations of inherited knowledge.

Fibre Selection & Preparation

Raw kozo bark is stripped, boiled in ash-lye, and hand-washed to reveal pure, long-strand fibres ready for papermaking.

Sheet Formation

Fibres are beaten into pulp and suspended in water. A bamboo screen is dipped through the suspension, capturing an even, translucent layer of future paper.

Drying & Finishing

Sheets are carefully pressed and sun-dried on wooden boards. The result: paper of singular softness, strength, and warm translucency.

Frame Building & Wrapping

A bamboo or wood armature is assembled by hand. Washi sheets are layered, stretched, and shaped around the frame to form the lantern.

Hand-Painted Motifs

Artisans apply traditional patterns — brushstrokes of ink, botanical motifs, geometric forms — directly onto the washi surface. No two are identical.

This paper lantern chandelier is easy to assemble and looks beautiful once it's hung. The entire light is made of high-quality materials and fills the room with a soft glow when it's turned on. The cord is a good length and can be connected to most outlets by simply hanging it on the hook, unless you hang it too far from the wall. It creates a great atmosphere whether it's on or off, and is the perfect addition to any room.

I like paper lanterns for easy, ambient lighting in little nooks and crannies in our house and was glad to see a full kit, with hanging hooks and a light cord included. Looks boho and clean.

The lantern is great quality and I'm very happy with the look. I was worried about the paper being too thin and it would tear, but it was no problem to install. The fact that it plugs in makes it perfect for any space (as long as there's an outlet nearby).

This lamp is perfect for adding ambiance to any room. It creates a more balanced lighting effect, and a soft diffuse light is also more suitable.

This was easy to put up and gives off a nice, soft light. It's pretty good size, a little bigger than expected, so I like that.

I needed to replace a hanging light in our living room and wanted something that would diffuse the light more than the previous fixture. I decided to try this out and it worked even better than expected.

Its easy to put together, and the cord is definitely long enough. The paper shade does a wonderful job of diffusing the light so its not harsh, but I couldnt believe how much it lit up the whole room! It looks beautiful lit up at night, and now I enjoy spending time in my living room after sunset because the lighting makes it feel so warm and cozy, while still being well-lit enough that I can work on my knitting or read without struggling.

This lamp was very easy to install and it looks great hanging in our guest room. The quality is nice and the paper shade is thick and well made. It adds a unique design element to the room at a very affordable price.
